ghost readers

Are you one of those people who reads blogs but doesn't comment? If I'm getting 500 hits a month on my blog, that's an average of 16 readers a day, not including me reading my own posts. Almost nobody comments.

Someone else whose blog I read (or was it on Twitter?) mentioned this. I'm sure we all have our reasons for not commenting on a post. Maybe we like the anonymity. Maybe we have nothing to say. Maybe we don't know how to comment, or find that whole entering-the-gobbledygook-word a bit of a mystery.

See this is one of the reasons I got these gadgets on the sidebar. That way I can see I have had readers recently from Winnipeg, Western Australia, Germany, and Rhode Island. Where are you friends-I-haven't-met coming from? How did you come to my blog? I would *really* love it if you told me how you found me. No really. I would. And if you have a blog, chances are, I'll start reading you back. I'm a pretty good commenter!

  2. I have to admit that I'm one of your ghost readers. I like this post, though, because just a couple of days ago I was wondering why no one comments on my blog either. I thought it was just me. So, I decided that I'd start commenting on the blogs I read, in case this was happening to anyone else.

So, my first comment to you!

I'm not sure how I found your blog, but it may have been through Twitter. I follow you there too. I tweet WAY more than I blog.

I really enjoy reading your blog! Keep up the great posts!

  3. I found your blog because I already knew you! :-)

And it's true, I don't comment on every post you write - just those I have something to comment on. I suspect you might be the same way with mine.

    best,
    Ursa

  5. I'm pretty sure you replied to one of my #knitting tweets a few times before we knew each other, so I went ahead and checked out your blog.

  6. Back when you were thinking about moving to New Mexico, I commented in that discussion (on Ravelry) since I used to live in Las Cruces. You friended me, I friended you back, I saw you have a blog - so I read it. :)
I tend to be kinda a quiet person in "real life", so it makes sense that I don't comment much on blogs.

  7. YAY to have so many people commenting! Thanks! I was pretty bummed about not moving to New Mexico, I was *so* ready to go there. Who knows, they wind may yet blow us eastward. (But we live on the very west coast of the continent, so everything is east.)(Ha.)

And yup, it's true, I will only comment if I have something to say, but that is often...

  8. And you know how hard it is to shut me up... :) I comment when I have something direct to reply to, but I love to read your blog just to keep up with what's going on in your days. We should talk "in person" sometime soon!

  9. I don't really remember! I think we met at a #knitchat Or maybe it was browsing ravelry.

Well anyway, it was yarn related :D

I think my reason for not commenting very often is because I've always been a good listener. I usually assume the role of nodding, making concerned faces, and "I see what you mean"ing. Those types of things don't translate into text very well.

On the other hand, when I have something to say, you won't be able to shut me up...as demonstrated by this ever-lengthening blog comment.

  10. I have to admit I just got here today, so I'm not a ghost reader yet. I was googling something about Rice Road, and saw the word Yarn in your blog title, and as I live on VI and am an avid knitter, I think we'll get along just fine. I'll be visiting again!

  11. I'm glad to see all the comments here!

Someone recently mentioned to me that they have issues commenting on my blog, I've not been able to figure it out though.

I met you through Twitter and try to comment - glad to meet you!
